Heparin had no effect on the stability of the enzyme or on its activity once the complex was formed.

A further indication of this was the fact that heparin decreased the rate of heat inactivation of the enzyme. However, Iverius et al. found that both the purified lipoprotein lipase and the crude preparation of the enzyme contained small amounts of endogenous heparin-like material, further indicating that heparin may be part of, or bound to, the protein. Although the precise role of heparin in lipoprotein lipase metabolism is not known, the above experiments indicate the following effects of this polyanion.
