It is harder to predict how American archaeologists will handle the issue of causality. If even a moderate emphasis on understanding cross-cultural regularities continues, material factors will likely still be regarded as significant constraints on human behavior and therefore as major factors influencing cultural development. It is likely, however, that there will be less emphasis on specifically ecological or technological factors as major constraints and more on broader economic factors, such as relations of production.

If the new historicism rightly tries to account for cultural variations ignored by the neoevolutionary New Archaeology, there is a danger that it may ignore the considerable regularities that neoevolutionism has documented. Yet it does not appear likely that American archaeology will sacrifice the accom- 34 History, method, and theory plishments of the last thirty years to embrace a neo-Boasian historical particularism. What kind of compromise is likely to emerge? Archaeologists will probably abandon the idea that only traits that are cross-culturally recurrent are worth understanding.

Science does not "interpret" experience apprehended a priori; it constructs an experience that is explained axiomatically by its laws. Cause is lodged in the axiomatic relations among concepts rather than in the empirical world (Wilier and Wilier 1974). The link between cause and phenomena is accomplished by positing mechanisms sufficient to produce the observed result. The systematic element characteristic of scientific knowledge arises because all hypotheses are generated by the same theory within a given field.
