Thirdly the activities of such communities will presuppose shared standards of rational justification that are independent of the de facto interests and preferences of their members.

There are many kinds of moral educator and the education that they provide is of various kinds: parents, aunts, school teachers, pastors, drill sergeants, workmates, friends, and saints. They succeed by inculcating habits, eliciting desires, redirecting sentiments, punishing us for, among other things, acting only so as to avoid punishment, and providing examples and role-models, so that Aristotle’s phrase “judging as the phronimos would judge” begins to find practical application in and to their pupils’ experience.
